Meet New Mexico’s own Marcia Hefker and learn about her ride and win in the Mongol Derby, the movie worthy finish, and the demanding sport of endurance racing.

Marcia grew up riding horses on her family’s cattle ranch in Carrizozo, New Mexico. About 15 years ago, Marcia traded barrel racing and roping for long-distance horse races. Today, she lives and works in Raton, NM as a nurse practitioner tending to residents and cowboys in the rugged northeast.

Riding 100 miles in a day isn’t uncommon for Marcia. She has completed dozens and won many endurance rides the U.S. and in France. In 2015, Hefker and her horses covered more than 900 miles in races alone. In 2016 Marcia won the 1000 km Mongol Derby, the longest horse race in the world.
