Horses returned to North America with the Spanish over 500 years ago. They have shaped New Mexican history and continue to be a defining part of our culture. Santa Fe Horse Coalition was formed in November 2013 by a group of concerned horse owners and equine professionals when public complaints about horses were presented to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) Sustainable Land Development Code (SLDC) Study Sessions and Community Meetings. These complaints were filled with inaccurate statistics and urban misconceptions about horse management. Their negative suggestions for change would have adversely affected our strong and culturally relevant horse community.

The first board of Santa Fe Horse Coalition mustered a membership of over 600 members, mobilized hundreds of letters and spoke to the Board of County Commissioners on behalf of our culture and the importance of preserving access to horses for future generations. The goal was to educate the lay community about horses and advocate for the importance of horses in our lives. Our mission: to raise public awareness of the positive impact of horses on the quality of life in Santa Fe County. We are proud to report, that on February 24, 2015, our efforts culminated in the passing of  Santa Fe County’s Equine Culture Resolution
