Stanley Cyclone Center BCC meeting regarding proposed rates for use

Please attend. Santa Fe County wants your input on proposed rates.

Tuesday, December 13, at 2:00 p.m.

Commissioner Robert Anaya’s office is requesting input to and attendance at a Bureau of County Commissioners meeting next week on Tuesday, December 13, at 2:00 p.m. at at 102 Grant Ave in Santa Fe. The issue regards the Stanley Cyclone Center Arena and proposed rates for use.  The attached rate schedule went before the BCC last Tuesday and Commissioner Anaya post-poned action on it as he believes the rates are too high.

Commissioner Anaya has been a strong supporter of equestrians and is requesting input from potential users and equestrian groups, livestock groups, 4-H, County Fair board members, and the like.  Please share this information with your equestrian groups and others you believe would be interested in using the facility.

The Stanley Cyclone Center Arena is a new ~51,000 sq. ft. indoor arena built and managed by Santa Fe County for equestrians and 4-H type activities.  It is located off of Highway 41 in Stanley at 22 West Kinyell Avenue.  This project was initiated by former County Commissioner Mike Anaya about 10 years ago.  The County is the final stages of determining use and operational needs, this is a vital time to set the standards for how this facility can best serve the equestrian community.

  1. Special rates to no charge is great for your local clubs such as FFA, 4H and Veterans. For small Horse Clubs
who compete occasionally, $150.00 a day is reasonable. Charging for Tractor work during the events with horses is paramount. Our club has paid $100.00 a day at other arenas. To offset the low fee you can request trash pickup, clean up manure from all areas of the grounds and pens and clean up shavings and clean bathrooms before you leave – Leave it as you found it! Security Deposit will definitely ensure this. My club has done this at other arenas and it has given us a rate decrease. Commercial Events $300.00 a day. Your Cowboys who do Heading and Roping of Livestock $200.00 a day. $10.00 per horse for Private Riding for
flat rate when no events-Do Clean Up here too. Usually $425.00 Damage Deposit for all Events.
Trying to recoup your cost right away is not a good Idea-you will find your arena frequently vacant. If you
are a Good LandLord and cater to the Community and its needs you will find us a willing and helpful Partner.

  2. The original intent stated by a County Commissioner for the Cyclone Center was to
    (1) benefit 4-H and FFA and (2) to promote economic growth for Stanley, NM. Now it seems Santa Fe County wants to make this a cash cow after having been built with taxpayer money. The ridiculous, proposed rates will insure minimum usage and only allow high dollar organizations/events to participate. Whoever proposed use fees has no concept of equine needs and economic status of Southern Santa Fe County.

  3. Have to agree somewhat with Ralph Hill. I have not seen anything regarding use of the center for occasional use by the general public. The Open Space/Arena in Edgewood is open to the public without fee. Would something like that be possible for the Stanley Cyclone Center/
