Update on Valles Caldera: continued and expanded access for horseback riders!

Thanks to all of those who attended the VCNP listening sessions and wrote letters supporting continued equine access to the Valles Caldera, soon to be Valles Caldera National Park.  Our efforts have been successful! New Mexico residents and visitors can look forward to expanded access to horseback riding in the park.

Below is an excerpt from a response from Senator Heinrich’s Office.

“…Wanted to circle back and let you know that we talked to the Executive Director of the Valles Caldera about this [the future of equestrian activies]. He assured us that if anything, access for horseback riders will increase, not decrease, and there won’t be restrictions on people bringing their own horses in.  They’re looking to expand access for non-hunting recreational users generally, including horseback riders, and due to road maintenance issues related to road washouts, will be encouraging a greater use of horses for people to access areas of the preserve that no longer have reliable motorized access….”

Special thanks to Sue Murphy for her work informing the horse community regarding the VCNP meetings and status, coordinating participation and reporting this great news.
