Call to Action: your input by June 15 secures a future for horses on our trails

A few minutes of your time now can build a future for horses on trails in the greater Santa Fe area. Whether you give 15 minutes or 5 minutes, please respond to this survey. Take this opportunity to decide which new trails will be funded and most importantly to demand ACCESS for horses on our trials. If we can’t park our trailers, we cannot ride the trails.

Reps from Santa Fe Horse Coalition, Northern New Mexico Horsemen’s Association, and Back County Horsemen have attended these trail workshop meetings to represent you–Santa Fe area equestrians. Help us complete our mission to secure access for horses on our trails and take this opportunity to champion new routes that you would like to ride.  Your input ensures that Santa Fe National Forest, Santa Fe County, city and state entities know that equestrians are engaged and committed to the future of horses on our trails.

A huge thank you to Karen Denison (of BCH, NNMHA and RGMDA) for taking on the demanding tasks of meeting with horse group leaders to determine trails of interest and preparing the document and links below which will help you to respond to the survey with ease and efficiency.

*Call to Action for Santa Fe area equestrians*

The Greater Santa Fe Recreation Partnership has requested public input into the current planning process for trail project prioritization.  Please spend a few minutes online before June 15 to help ensure trails are available to local equestrians in the future.
(This area includes Galisteo, Cerrillos, Valles Caldera, Caja del Rio, and Canada de los Alamos as well as other popular riding areas.)

During earlier public meetings, a variety of users contributed and identified on area maps over 200 desired projects.   Since equestrians have concerns different from other user groups (especially regarding trailer parking and horse-friendly gate access), and since the full scope of the overall planning project is so very large, a handful of equestrian volunteers from several organizations have worked to summarize a focused “wish list” of projects which we believe will protect and enhance trail riding opportunities within the planning boundary.

Please complete the requested online survey to help the various land managers understand that equestrians’ concerns count and some of their very limited budgets should go toward projects which matter to us!  There are two parts: the 3-question survey for “trail criteria” and the survey about specific areas.

IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, please do the trail criteria survey, which asks you to choose three criteria important for ranking projects.  PLEASE WRITE IN “SAFE PARKING FOR HORSE TRAILERS” or something like it as a new criterion.  Despite being suggested previously, that was omitted.

The planning area has been broken down by sub-area, and there are annotated maps which correspond to each.  Numbered designations identify trailheads (THS), new trails (NT) or general comments (G).

The survey will give you space to list 13 projects total; the first 10 are supposed to be previously identified on maps by code, followed by room for an additional 3 “new” projects.  For each, you’ll be asked why you think the project is important.  Despite the format, please list whatever projects you think most greatly merit their attention.

Thank you for participating.
